How to define clear and effective product goals?

I am not going to write any catchy headline or start for this. To define product goal which aligns to product vision itself is a process which requires more brain power😅

We do have amazing techniques that can help us to define the right product goal. As you would be implementing Scrum in your current projects, you would know for sure that for product vision - we have to achieve multiple product goals.

To decide the product goals, here are some techniques that you can implement as per the need of your team and client's expectation:

  1. Customer Interviews and Surveys: Engage directly with customers to gather insights about their pain points, needs, and desires. Use these insights to inform your product goals.

This is the most general technique we implement. Although this can be biased as customer would have limited knowledge or would be still in discovery phase. It is definitely a good start though.

2. Competitive Analysis: Analyze the competition to identify gaps and opportunities. Set goals that help your product stand out or address unmet needs in the market. This technique requires research. This can be done by your internal team. Business Analyst and Product owner can work on the research.

3. Rapid Experimentation: Set goals that encourage a culture of experimentation. Emphasize learning and adaptation based on the results of these experiments. This can be interesting. You can run a small experiment with your internal team, can create some prototypes, brainstorm different use case for the same.

4. Customer Journey Goals: Define goals at various stages of the customer journey (e.g., awareness, acquisition, retention) to ensure a comprehensive approach to product development. This technique is user specific. Keeping the ultimate users in mind, you can define the goals. Creating MVP here helps.

5. Jobs to be Done (JTBD): Focus on understanding the "jobs" or tasks that customers want to accomplish with your product. Define goals based on these specific jobs and the desired outcomes. This depends on the nature of the product you are building. There is lot of content out there on JTBD - it might seem complex - you can give it a try if you have time.

Hope in next product you build, you can use above techniques. Remember, defining product goal is not one-man task. Whole scrum team would be involved in the process. Clients' expectation, Market demand, what end-user needs, what we can achieve technically - all these matters when defining product goal.

Keeping building fantastic products!
